Asamkirche

This time something closer to home —

Strolling down the Sendlinger Straße (street) in Munich, one hardly notices the Asamkirche (or Asams’ church) till you stop to take another look and wonder what’s so special about this fancy building. Tucked away between houses, I did not know I was entering a church – and when I did, it seemed such a complete contrast to some other churches I had seen in Munich, due to its rich, ornate decor. Not surprising then, when I later read that this was built as a private church by the Asam brothers.

The church was built from 1733 to 1746 by the brothers Egid Quirin Asam and Cosmas Damian Asam as their private church. The interiors are richly decorated and very ornate. (Aug 2014)
