Sonar Qilla (Golden Fort)

The Jaisalmer fort is about 800 years old and one of those rare forts, which are still inhabited. According to Wikipedia, about a quarter of the old city’s population still resides within the bastions of this yellow sandstone fort that gives its name – Sonar Qilla (translated as Golden Fort in English). With its 99 bastions, it is a massive edifice and was listed in 2013 as a UNESCO World Heritage site. No trip to Rajasthan would be complete without a visit to this desert town with its rough beauty and golden charm.

The Sonar Qilla with its 99 bastions is visible from miles away due to its location on a small hill lifting it above the otherwise flat arid terrain (Nov 2018)
